Version 1.1 · Last updated 12 August 2026 · Next review 12 February 2027
This policy covers turning up, catching up, and how we expect people to behave in a room with 8 students and 2 instructors. It forms part of our Terms of Enrolment.
Please read this before you read anything else. These terms are written in good faith and in plain English, to the standard normally used by training providers in Canada. They are not legal advice, and they are pending review by a lawyer. If any part of this matters to your decision, phone (587) 873-9331 and we will confirm it in writing before you pay anything.
1. The 80% rule
To be certified you must attend at least 80% of your program’s scheduled contact hours. On the Foundations Intensive, which runs 20 sessions of three hours across ten weeks, that means you can miss up to 4 sessions and still qualify. The specialty certifications are shorter, so the number of sessions you can miss is smaller. We will tell you the exact figure for your program on day one.
We take a register at the start of every session and again after the break. Attendance is counted in hours, not in sessions, so arriving 90 minutes late costs you half a session.
This is not bureaucracy. Braiding is a hand skill built by repetition under supervision, and there is no way to acquire it in your absence.
2. Telling us you will be away
Text or phone (587) 873-9331 before the session starts, or email info@celegantbraidingacademy.com. You do not owe us a reason. We ask because with 8 seats we plan the room around who is in it.
An absence we know about and an absence we do not both count the same way against your 80%. The difference is what we can do to help you catch up.
3. Lateness
Sessions start on time. If you arrive more than 15 minutes late you may be asked to wait until the demonstration finishes before you take a station, because walking in mid-demonstration takes the room apart for everybody else. Time missed is counted.
Traffic, buses and childcare are real. Tell us and we will work with you. Chronic lateness, though, is something we will raise with you, because it eats into your own contact hours first.
4. Catching up on a missed session
Here is what we can and cannot do, honestly.
- We do not record in-person classes. There is no video to send you. See Photography, filming and consent for why.
- You will get the written material for the session you missed, and a short summary of what was covered.
- You may sit in on the same session with a later cohort, once, at no charge, if that cohort is running within 12 months and there is a spare seat. Seats are not guaranteed, and a full cohort takes priority.
- Your instructor will give you 15 minutes at the start of the next session to check the technique you missed. That is a check, not a re-teach.
- One-to-one catch-up teaching is available where an instructor has time, at $99 for a three-hour session. Ask early. It is not always possible.
5. If you fall below 80%
You may still finish the program, and you are still welcome in the room. What changes is the paperwork at the end.
- You receive a letter of attendance stating the hours you actually completed, instead of the professional certificate.
- You can convert it into the full certificate by completing the missing hours with a later cohort within 12 months, at $99 per three-hour session, subject to seats being free.
- We will warn you in writing as soon as your attendance puts the certificate at risk, not at the end when it is too late to fix.
Falling below 80% does not entitle you to a refund. See Refunds, withdrawals and rescheduling.
6. Assessment: the 70% rule
Assessment is by assignment, not by exam. You need an average of at least 70% across the assessed work to be certified.
- You are told what each assignment is worth, and what a pass looks like, before you start it.
- Assessed work is marked and returned with written feedback, normally within 10 business days.
- You may resubmit any single assignment once, free, within 14 days of getting it back.
- The work must be yours. Presenting somebody else’s braiding, or somebody else’s writing, as your own means that assignment scores zero, and it is a conduct matter under section 8.
- If you think a mark is wrong, say so within 14 days and a second instructor will look at it. That is set out in Complaints and dispute resolution.
7. What we expect in the room
None of this is complicated. It is what any working salon would expect on a Saturday.
- Arrive ready to work. Hands clean, nails manageable, kit with you, phone away during demonstrations.
- Follow every sanitation and safety instruction, first time. Tool hygiene is not optional and is not negotiable.
- Treat models the way you would treat a paying client. Ask before you touch. Check tension. Stop when you are asked to stop.
- Respect the other seven people in the room. Nobody is further behind than they are allowed to be.
- Keep your station clean and leave it the way you found it.
- Ask for help early. The single most common reason a student struggles is that they waited until week six to say they were lost.
- Keep what you see in the room in the room. Other students’ hair, health information and personal circumstances are not yours to discuss.
8. Conduct that ends a place
Any of the following is grounds for removal from a program.
- Harassment, bullying, intimidation, threats or violence, toward anybody.
- Discrimination or slurs on the basis of race, colour, ancestry, place of origin, religion, gender, gender identity or expression, sexual orientation, age, disability, family status, marital status or source of income.
- Touching a model or another student without consent, or continuing after being asked to stop.
- Repeatedly refusing to follow a sanitation or safety instruction.
- Attending under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
- Photographing or filming anyone who has not agreed to it. See Photography, filming and consent.
- Recording a class, or copying, sharing or reselling our course materials.
- Cheating, or passing off work that is not yours.
- Recruiting students, models or staff for your own business on our premises, or using the class list to market to people.
- Damaging the premises, the equipment or somebody else’s property.
- Not paying what you owe.
9. Guests, children and visitors
The classroom is a working space with sharp tools, hot water and people concentrating. We cannot allow children in the classroom during a session, and we cannot supervise them anywhere else on the premises. We know that is hard, and it is why classes run from 4pm rather than in the middle of the working day.
Adult visitors, including a support person, are welcome by prior arrangement. Phone (587) 873-9331 and we will sort it out. A support person you need for a disability attends at no charge. See Accessibility.
10. Warnings and removal
For most things there are three steps, and we do not skip them.
- A quiet word. In private, at the end of a session. Most matters end here.
- A written warning. It says what happened, what needs to change, and by when.
- Removal from the program. In writing, with reasons.
Serious matters skip straight to removal. Violence, threats, harassment, discrimination, touching somebody who has not consented, or anything that puts a person’s safety at risk will end your place immediately. Where somebody in the room is frightened, we act at once rather than work through three steps.
11. Removal and refunds
If you are removed for conduct, there is no refund, and any certificate already issued in respect of that program can be withdrawn. Your kit is yours to keep.
If we later accept that we got the decision wrong, we refund you in full and offer you a place in the next cohort.
12. Appealing a removal
You can appeal in writing to info@celegantbraidingacademy.com within 14 calendar days. The appeal is decided by the Academy Director, who will not have made the original decision where that is possible, and you will get an answer within 10 business days. You may bring a support person to any meeting.
If you are still not satisfied, the external routes are set out in Complaints and dispute resolution.
13. What you can expect from us
A code of conduct that only points one way is not worth much. So, in return:
- Sessions start and finish on time.
- A maximum of 8 students and 2 instructors, so you get looked at.
- Clean, working tools and a clean room.
- Feedback that is specific and usable, and given in a way that does not humiliate you in front of seven other people.
- An honest answer when you ask whether you are ready, including when the answer is no.
- No discrimination, from us or from anybody else in the room, and action if it happens.
