A braiding school needs pictures of braiding. It does not need pictures of you unless you say yes. This page explains when a camera comes out at Unit 316, how we ask, what we do with what we take, and how you get it taken down. It forms part of our Terms of Enrolment.
Please read this before you read anything else. These terms are written in good faith and in plain English, to the standard normally used by training providers in Canada. They are not legal advice, and they are pending review by a lawyer. If any part of this matters to your decision, phone (587) 873-9331 and we will confirm it in writing before you pay anything.
The short version
- Consent is opt-in, in writing, and specific. Silence is not consent.
- Saying no changes nothing. Not your place, not your marks, not your certificate, not how anyone treats you.
- You can change your mind at any time, including years later, and we take it down.
- We do not record classes, so there is no lecture video of you sitting there.
- Most of what we publish shows hands and hair, not faces. That is a deliberate choice, not an accident.
1. What we photograph, and why
Three things, for three different reasons.
- Finished work. The back of a head, a completed set of braids, a parting pattern. This is the bulk of it, and it usually shows no face at all.
- Hands at work. Grip, tension, sectioning. These are teaching images, and the person attached to the hands is rarely identifiable.
- The room and the people in it. A class in progress, an instructor correcting a student, a graduation. These do show faces, and these are the ones we ask about carefully.
We use them to teach, to show prospective students what the training actually looks like, and to market the Academy. That last one is a real reason, and we would rather name it.
2. How we ask
- A written consent form on day one, with separate tick boxes for teaching use, for our website and social media, and for printed material. You can tick one, two, all three, or none. Nothing is pre-ticked, and there is no bundled all-or-nothing option.
- We tell the room before a camera comes out, every time, and we check who has opted out.
- For anything that features you specifically, for example a progress comparison or a graduate story, we ask again, separately, at the time, showing you the actual image or words.
- Your name is only ever used if you tick the box that says so. Consent to an image is not consent to being named.
3. Refusing costs you nothing
We will say this as plainly as we can. Refusing to be photographed has no effect on your place, your assessment, your certificate, the attention you get from an instructor, or anything else. It is not a favour you are doing us that we will remember. If anyone ever makes you feel otherwise, tell us and we will deal with it.
If you have opted out, we position you out of shot or we do not take the shot. If you appear in the background of something by accident, tell us and we crop it, blur it or delete it.
4. Where images may appear
- This website, including the student work page.
- Our social media accounts, which currently include Instagram, Facebook, TikTok, YouTube, X and Pinterest.
- Paid advertising on Meta and TikTok.
- Printed material such as flyers and the curriculum PDF.
- Teaching material shown inside a classroom.
Two honest warnings about social media. Once something is posted publicly, other people can copy it, and we cannot pull those copies back. And the platforms hold their own copies under their own terms. If that matters to you, do not tick the social media box. It is a perfectly sensible thing to decline.
5. What we hold ourselves to
- Your image stays with us, and only with us.
- Any image of you is used to show what you actually did, and nothing more.
- Instructor work is labelled instructor work, and student work is labelled student work. Every image we publish says who did the work.
- Everyone who appears in a published image has consented to be in it, including anyone in the background.
- An image stays an image. A testimonial needs words, a name and separate written permission. See our rules on Student work.
- Scalp conditions, injuries and medical issues stay off camera.
- Cameras stay out of changing areas and washrooms, obviously.
6. Models
Every model signs their own photography consent, separately from their consent to the service, and refusing has no effect on the session. A model can happily agree to sit for three hours and want no picture of it, and that is entirely their call. See Model policy and waiver.
If you bring your own model, you must not photograph them for your own portfolio unless they have agreed to that too. Your consent form does not cover somebody else’s head.
7. Withdrawing your consent
Email info@celegantbraidingacademy.com or phone (587) 873-9331. You do not need to give a reason and you do not need to be polite about it.
- We remove it from this website and our own social accounts within 5 business days.
- We stop using it in paid advertising within 5 business days.
- We stop using it in new printed material immediately. Material already printed and distributed cannot be recalled, and we will tell you honestly what is already out there.
- We delete the original file unless we are required to keep it.
- What we cannot do is remove copies other people made while it was public. We will tell you that up front rather than promise something we cannot deliver.
Withdrawing consent is not retrospective. It does not make our earlier use unlawful, and it does not entitle anybody to a payment.
8. You filming in class
- You may photograph your own work, on a mannequin, at any time. It is your portfolio and you should be building it from week one.
- You may not photograph or film another student, an instructor, or a model without their agreement. Ask first, out loud, every time.
- You may not record demonstrations or lessons. Our teaching material is our property, and section 11 of the Terms of Enrolment covers why. If you want the technique written down, ask, and we will give you the handout.
- Do not livestream from the classroom. Consent cannot be checked in real time.
- Posting a photo of somebody else from class without asking is a conduct matter under Attendance and code of conduct.
9. Under 18s
For any student or model aged 16 or 17, photography consent is given by a parent or legal guardian and by the young person themselves. If either one says no, the answer is no.
10. How we store it
Images of identifiable people are personal information and are handled under our Privacy Policy. We keep consent forms for as long as we use the image and for three years afterwards, so that we can always show what somebody agreed to and when.
